Classes at the DCC

The Danbury Community Center regularly offers classes in First Aid, CPR/AED, babysitting, lifeguard certification/recertification, and swim instructor training. These courses not only contribute to workforce development in the community, but they also serve to strengthen the community and make it a safer place to live.

The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program is designed to help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. The courses in this program teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person when minutes matter, and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed. This program offers a choice of First Aid, CPR and AED courses in traditional classroom or blended learning (online learning with instructor-led skill session) formats, in addition to optional skill boosts to meet the various training needs of a diverse audience.

The Lifeguard Certification Course is $400. However, if you agree to work for the Danbury Community Center (application submitted prior to registering and spoke with Aquatics Director) the cost will be $200.

Candidates must:

  • Be at least 15 years of age
  • Not miss any class sessions
  • Pass prerequisites:
    1. 150-yard swim using front crawl and/or breaststroke, tread water for 2 minutes only using legs, swim 50 yards using front crawl and/or breaststroke
    2. Complete timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds: swim 20 yards towards deep end, submerge to depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve 10-pound object, return to surface and kick on back holding object at the surface with both hands and face out of the water to the start point, and exit water without using ladder or steps.
